INTRODUCTION
This Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit is a vocational qualification designed to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of the basic principles involved in domestic retrofit within the construction industry.
The course focuses on the building insulation aspect of retrofit and introduces learners to how existing properties can be improved to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. It supports understanding of how retrofit contributes to tackling climate change and improving the performance of buildings.
This qualification is primarily aimed at learners aged 16 and above who may already have some experience in construction or are looking to move into the retrofit sector. While there are no formal entry requirements, a background in construction is beneficial.
MODULE OVERVIEW
This unit provides learners with a broad overview of domestic retrofit, including key principles, processes, and industry practices.
Throughout the course, learners will develop knowledge in:
- The purpose of domestic retrofit and its role in reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency
- Types of information, documentation, and organisational structures used within retrofit projects
- Health and safety legislation, risk assessment, and safe working practices within construction environments
- Materials and resources used in retrofit, particularly insulation systems
- Identifying risks, hazards, and methods to protect work areas and surrounding environments
- Understanding building defects and pre-installation checks
- Basic principles of installing insulation in walls, roofs, floors, and other areas
- The importance of teamwork, communication, and safe use of tools and equipment
PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
On successful completion of the Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit, learners can progress to:
- Further qualifications such as NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Building Insulation and Treatments
- Additional training in domestic retrofit installation techniques
- Employment opportunities within the retrofit and wider construction sector
This qualification provides a strong knowledge-based foundation, supporting learners in developing the understanding required to move into practical roles or further specialist training within the growing retrofit industry
