INTRODUCTION
The Level 1 Award: NZEB Schools Fundamentals Programme is designed to introduce its’ students to the core principles and relevance of Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in the context of environmental sustainability and climate action. Spanning seven one-day modules, the course covers everything from the foundations of NZEB and energy-efficient building features, to renewable energy systems, building physics, and career pathways.
Learners engage with interactive lessons and hands-on demonstrations, gaining foundational knowledge in energy performance, construction science, and the systems that power and regulate modern sustainable buildings. With no prior experience required, this entry-level award supports learners in developing the confidence, skills, and awareness needed to pursue further education or entry-level roles in the growing green construction and energy sectors.
MODULE OVERVIEW
UNDERSTAND WHAT NZEB IS AND WHY IT MATTERS
Introduces the concept of NZEB and its role in addressing climate change. Explores the importance of energy-efficient buildings in environmental sustainability. Builds awareness of the social, economic, and ecological benefits of NZEB
IDENTIFY KEY FEATURES OF ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS
Examines construction features like insulation, glazing. and airtightness. Explores how these components reduce energy lass and enhance performance. Learners identify strengths and limitations el different design features.
RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS
Covers types of renewable energy systems (solar PV, heat pumps, etc.). Explains how renewables integrate into buildings and reduce carbon footprints. Learners understand system functions, benefits, and potential challenges
BUILDING PHYSICS
Introduces the science of heat, moisture, and air flow in buildings, Explains how physics affects comfort, efficiency, and structural performance. Connects theoretical concepts to practical construction design decisions.
BUILDING ENERGY SERVICES
Explores heating, ventilation, lighting, and control systems in NZEB. Focuses on how services support comfort while minimising energy use.
Learners discover how energy services interact and are regulated.
COMMUNICATION AND INTERFACING
Highlights the importance of collaboration in sustainable construction: Explains how building systems must interface across trades and disciplines. Learners practise effective communication using technical and visual tools.
CAREERS IN NZEB AND SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
Provides insight into green career pathways and future opportunities. Discusses required skills, progression routes, and emerging technologies. Encourages learners to plan next steps based on interests and strengths.
PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
Upon successful completion, learners may:
01: Entry into Level 2 courses in construction, energy, or environmental science.
02: Progression to NZEB Plumbing or Electrical Level 1 programmes.
03: Employment as a trainee in sustainable construction or retrofit roles, Volunteering or internships in green building projects.
05: Pathways to apprenticeships in renewable energy or property maintenance.
06: Further training in digital building design, smart systems, or site management.
