INTRODUCTION
The NOCN Level 1 Award in Waste and Recycling is a vocational knowledge-based qualification and as such, offers the opportunity for learners to demonstrate an achievement of the basic knowledge and understanding of waste and recycling activities.
This qualification will prepare learners with the knowledge to enter employment in the waste and recycling industry in roles such as:
- Waste/recycling site operative
- Household waste recycling operative
- Transfer station operative
- Manual/mechanical street cleaner
- Compost operative
- Waste/recycling collection driver
This qualification has been developed with sector employers and representative organisations and is supported by LARAC. It supports the increasing demand for skills linked to green occupations, contributing to UK Government targets to meet net zero by 2050.
MODULE OVERVIEW
Introduction to Waste and Recycling:
The aim of this unit is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding of the procedures for accepting, collecting, sorting, removing and disposing of waste and recyclable materials. Learners will understand safe working practices in the workplace and safety around equipment and vehicles.

skills required to:
- Progress into further learning at a higher level, such as NOCN Level 2 qualifications in Construction, Facilities Services, Property Maintenance, Team Leading or Warehousing and Storage
